Technology is a wonderful learning tool. Whether technology is incorporated through simple writing assignments and document uploading or in an expansive lesson plan creating digital artwork, technology has unlimited applications and benefits that enhance the learning experience. By incorporating technology in the classroom students are more engaged, more empowered and more active in their learning. Research shows that the more engaged students are with their learning the higher the test scores. Today's students are technology savvy; including technology in the classroom, teachers are able to present information in new and different ways thus increasing students active involvement in their learning.
It may seem unusual to think about technology in a fine arts classroom verses a computer science course; however, with the ability to quickly research artists, artworks and art movements online, students have access to art on a global perspective.
Most of my lesson plans use some aspect of technology. The key point when doing so is to remember that technology is wonderful, when it works, but sometimes it does not. An effective teacher is able to incorporate technology within the classroom, while also retaining the ability to work through lessons without it.
Many schools are ample in meeting technology on a 1:1 bases, providing each student with a computer, laptop, or iPad. However, not all schools have this luxury. As a teacher with readily available technology, I try to incorporate technology use that is relevant to the curriculum while maintaining the flexibility to work through times when networks are down or through computer failure.
