My original impression of essential oils was misinformed from years of exposure to cosmetic perfumes and colognes and home decor scented candles. I suffer from migraines when I come in contact with cosmetic fragrances, scented soaps and lotions, chemical household cleaners and other products industrial products. I thought essential oils were nothing more than fancy perfumes that would do nothing more than trigger my migraines.
Whenever anyone suggested I try essential oils to relieve allergy symptoms, acne, or with a carrier oil for a skin moisturizer, I would say, “No. I'm allergic to everything scented or fragrances.” It was only after a torn rotator cuff that I dropped my preconceived notions about essential oils.
I did not want to take prescription painkillers and looked to various alternate anti-inflammatories and analgesics. On my first appointment to one of my Reiki practitioners she introduced me to essential oils for balancing my energies and pain management. I decided to try out using a sample of essential oils she mixed for me that included peppermint oil. I was surprised that I actually had some instant pain relief and no migraine.
